Two federal standards

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards are rules in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Two are about windshields: FMVSS 205 on glazing materials and FMVSS 212 on windshield mounting.

FMVSS 205: glazing

FMVSS 205 says: "This standard specifies requirements for glazing materials for use in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment."

What FMVSS 205 is for

Its stated purpose is "to reduce injuries resulting from impact to glazing surfaces, to ensure a necessary degree of transparency in motor vehicle windows for driver visibility, and to minimize the possibility of occupants being thrown through the vehicle windows in collisions."

FMVSS 212: mounting

FMVSS 212 says: "This standard establishes windshield retention requirements for motor vehicles during crashes."

What FMVSS 212 is for

Its stated purpose is "to reduce crash injuries and fatalities by providing for retention of the vehicle windshield during a crash."

What we do not say

We do not say that any glass, shop, or installation meets either standard. Ask the shop in writing what glass it will use.

FAQ

FMVSS 205 says: "Glazing intended for aftermarket replacement is required to meet the requirements of this standard." We do not say whether any product does.
We do not explain glass marks or codes. Ask the shop in writing what glass it will use.

General information only. We are not a glass shop, insurer, or agent, and we do not schedule, quote, or refer. Whether your policy covers glass damage, and what you would pay, depend on your policy and your insurer; read your policy and ask your insurer or agent. If your vehicle has driver assistance features, follow your vehicle maker's instructions and owner's manual on any calibration after glass work.
