OEM vs aftermarket glass

What the two words mean, and what we do not claim.

OEM

"OEM" stands for original equipment manufacturer. On this site, OEM glass means glass from the vehicle maker or its supplier.

Aftermarket

On this site, aftermarket glass means glass from another maker. The FTC says: "An aftermarket part is a part made by a company that didn't make your vehicle."

The federal glazing rule

FMVSS 205 says: "This standard specifies requirements for glazing materials for use in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment." It also says: "Glazing intended for aftermarket replacement is required to meet the requirements of this standard."

What we do not claim

We do not compare OEM and aftermarket glass, and we do not say that any glass meets any standard. We name no glass makers.

Ask in writing

The FTC says: "Your state may require repair shops to tell you if non-original equipment will be used in the repair." Ask the shop in writing which kind of glass it will use.

Your warranty

The FTC says: "Your warranty stays in effect if you use aftermarket or recycled parts." Read your warranty, and see our warranty guide.

OEM and aftermarket. Two words, plain facts.

FAQ

We do not pick. Ask a qualified shop and follow your vehicle maker's guidance.
We do not say. Glass coverage depends on your policy. Read your policy and ask your insurer or agent what it covers, what your deductible is, and how a claim could affect you.

General information only. We are not a glass shop, insurer, or agent, and we do not schedule, quote, or refer. Whether your policy covers glass damage, and what you would pay, depend on your policy and your insurer; read your policy and ask your insurer or agent. If your vehicle has driver assistance features, follow your vehicle maker's instructions and owner's manual on any calibration after glass work.
