Lane departure warning

NHTSA says lane departure warning "Monitors the vehicle's position within the driving lane and alerts the driver as the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markers."

A warning only

NHTSA says "a lane departure warning system only provides a warning to the driver and does not take action to avoid a crash."

How NHTSA says it works

NHTSA says a lane departure warning system "uses a camera to detect when the vehicle is veering out of its lane."

Lane keeping assistance

NHTSA says lane keeping assistance "Automatically and gently steers to prevent the vehicle from departing the lane." It says the system uses information provided by lane departure warning sensors.

Lane centering assistance

NHTSA says lane centering assistance "Provides continual steering to keep the vehicle centered in its lane."

Who drives

NHTSA lists lane keeping assistance as a Level 1 example and says: "You, as the driver, are responsible for driving the vehicle."
